Fight the Good Fight of Faith

Updated: Oct 28

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Ephesians 6:13 NKJV

You have been given the victory!

The Lord is so wonderful. Because I know a lot of us have been going through various trials and tribulations. Various things have come your way and it feels like we just can’t get over. Before one battle is done another one has reared its head. And it can be discouraging. But I want to encourage you with this. The battle has been won.

This Christian journey is a pilgrimage through a fallen world to a perfect kingdom. And while we’re here there are various things we will encounter. But, the beautiful thing is that we are automatically on the winning side. Not because of anything we’ve done but, because of all that He has done!

Jesus says in John 16:33 (NLT)  that -

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.

What a beautiful promise and assurance? On the cross Jesus declared “it is finished”. He declared an end to sin and satan’s rule and reign over our lives. We are victorious in and through the cross. The cross is where death, hell and the grave was defeated once and for all (1 Corinthians 15:54-57, Colossians 2:14-15).

I was praying and spending time with the Lord in the word a few months ago and I got so convicted. I was in the book of Romans - in my favourite chapter (Rom 4) and four words literally hopped off of the page and slapped me in the face. “For God had said”. Abraham believed what God had said, took Him fully at His word and ran with it. Despite his present circumstances he chose to believe that God would come through on His promise of a son.

You see, we need to understand that there is power in the word of God, it is alive and powerful (Hebrews 4:12). God responds to faith (Hebrews 11:6). It’s His will for you to do well. It’s His will for you to walk in the fullness of what He has for you (Ephesians 2:10). He has great plans for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

In Mark 4 verses 35-41 we see the story of the disciples on the boat with Jesus.

As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.

Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.

Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”

Mark 4:35-41 NLT

The word of God never fails. And I want you to see that through this scripture. Jesus told the disciples that they were going to cross over to the other side. But, what happened on the way there? They encountered a storm. A storm so violent that it caused great fear amongst them and where was Jesus? He was right in the boat with them. And I say that to say that a trial, a storm etc. does not ever determine the Lord’s proximity to you. He is with you always.

God’s word never fails. The storm came, their boat was tossed to and fro yet, they made it to the other side amen? The One who has authority over the winds and the waves was right there with them. And He is with you too. One of His names is Jehovah Shammah which means present help in time of need. That is who He is! Emmanuel, God with us.

God is not afraid of your trials, He’s not afraid of your tears. He knows all and He cares for you. Your burdens aren’t for you to carry. Jesus paid the full price at the cross for you. Everything He endured was for you so that you no longer walk burdened and bound.

We are no longer strangers to the promise. We’re not aliens, but SONS of God (Ephesians 2:12) and we have been given access to the holy of holies. You can have an audience with the King at any time and even more so He wants to hear you (Matthew 11:28).

In the midst of the struggle He sees you, He is with you and has equipped you with all that you need for the battle you’re facing.

What blesses me so much when I read about the armour of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) is that there is no armour for your back, I imagine the Lord standing behind me. For He is the One who goes before you and beside you. He is your shade on your right hand. He will not suffer your foot to be moved! You do not walk alone. Even as the waters rage and the rain batters against the ship know that your God is right there with you. The waters will not drown you neither will the fire burn you (Isaiah 43:2).

Keep on keeping on. There’s a powerful quote I like to remember when I’m struggling. It says if you can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk, crawl. Whatever you do, don’t stop moving. And I want to encourage you with that. Maybe you can’t read 10 chapters a day in this season but don’t put down your sword! Maybe you can’t pray for 2 hours but keep praying nonetheless. Maybe you can’t sing to the Lord for hours on end, but sing to him with tears falling down your face.

Don’t let the devil steal your song, your joy, your peace. He didn’t give it to you so he sure can’t take it away! Now is not the time to put down your weaponry, in fact. This is the time to take it up and put to work all that you’ve been doing this whole time.

Smith Wigglesworth once said "Great faith is the product of great fights. Great testimonies are the outcome of great tests. Great triumphs can only come out of great trials."

There is such great power in your testimony and your breakthrough. In Acts 16:25-26 we see Paul and Silas’ worship literally break down prison walls! And there is so much here.

The victory seen by Paul and Silas wasn’t only for them but everyone in the prison received their breakthrough because of their worship and prayer! Come on! You just don’t know, your testimony could bring freedom for so many people. Going back to Abraham in Romans 4, not only was he counted as righteous through faith but, now we are able to enjoy the same blessing because of his faith.

It’s not easy, but the battle is not yours. It is the Lord’s.

Galatians 6:9 says:

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

It’s that persistence that breaks the resistance.

You have already sown so much and as a result, your harvest time is coming (Ecclesiastes 3:2).

I want to leave you with this, the Lord is with you, He is the one who is closer than a brother. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He knows the end from the beginning. You may say but Lord you promised me X and you told me Y. Just because you haven’t seen it yet doesn’t mean it’s not on the way. God is not a man that He should lie. When He says something it is sure to come to pass (Isaiah 55:11).

Personally, when I get a bit shaky in faith I look to the sky, I look at creation. Whether it’s my dog, or a plant and I see that from the beginning of the earth; when God said let there be light (Genesis 1:3), when He gave one light to rule over the day and the lesser light to rule over the night that the sun and the moon still stand (Genesis 1:16). The trees are still producing fruit of its own kind. That the birds still fly and the fish still swim, it encourages me that His word is reliable. Since He spoke creation into being once, it has not ceased.

So take up your sword, eat daily bread. Rest in His finished work. The battle has been won, we are to enforce it.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the victory that was won for me at calvary. Thank You that the battle has been won and that I only need to stand still.

Lord, I relinquish all control and choose to trust You in spite of and despite my current circumstances. Thank You Lord that on the other side of this trial is a great victory, that from this testing will come a great testimony.

Thank You that I am victorious in Christ and in the finished work of the cross and that I have all that I need to get me through this trial because I have You Jesus.

In Your precious name I pray, amen.
